Throat Care & Surgery

Pinehurst Surgical’s board certified otolaryngologists are trained to diagnose, treat, and perform surgery for disorders of the throat, as well as the ear, nose, head and neck areas. Our Pinehurst, NC throat doctors specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders, as well as issues related to the throat and vocal cord.

Thyroid Problem Treatment at Pinehurst Surgical

The thyroid gland is responsible for regulating hormone levels and metabolism, as well as stimulating cell activity, heart muscles, nerves and the brain. Many disorders can affect the thyroid gland, including:

  • Autoimmune conditions (e.g. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Grave’s disease)

  • Thyroid nodules with goiter – Thyroid nodules are small growths that are typically asymptomatic; fortunately, greater than 90% of thyroid nodules will be benign. Although nodules do not usually affect thyroid hormone production, blood tests of thyroid function should be done to see if the thyroid is still making the normal amount of thyroid hormone. An ultrasound is also a reliable method to rule out malignancy in thyroid nodules.

  • Thyroid cancer – Thyroid cancer in our patients from Southern Pines, Fayetteville and beyond is readily treatable, usually with total thyroidectomy and radioactive thyroid iodine ablation.

If you are experiencing noticeable fluctuations in your weight, mood or energy level, don’t wait to call our ENT specialists in Pinehurst, Raeford, Rockingham, Sanford or Troy, NC about potential thyroid disorder treatments.

Parathyroid Disorders

Parathyroid glands are four small glands of the endocrine system which regulate the calcium in our bodies. Parathyroid glands are located in the neck behind the thyroid where they continuously monitor and regulate blood calcium levels. The Parathyroid glands make a hormone, called "Parathyroid Hormone". Parathyroids are NOT related to the thyroid (except they are neighbors in the neck). The thyroid gland controls much of your body's metabolism, but the parathyroid glands control body calcium.

Parathyroid glands (we all have 4 of them) are normally the size of a grain of rice. Occasionally they can be as large as a pea and still be normal. Although the thyroid and parathyroid glands are both part of the endocrine system, they are otherwise unrelated and do not have the same function.

The most common abnormality of the parathyroid glands is an enlarged parathyroid gland or adenoma. This is a benign condition that results in high levels of calcium and elevated parathyroid hormone that can eventually result in bone loss through osteoporosis, constipation, mood changes or kidney stones.

Parathyroid adenomas can be detected by blood tests and nuclear medicine scans (i.e., Sestamibi scans) and are generally treated by surgical removal when they become symptomatic.
